1st Annual Pleasant Valley Aquathlon 5K (with social distancing)

COVID-19 Plan

We have collaborated with Race Directors around the country on how to implement a socially distant, yet fun event! Below are some highlights of what we are doing for our participants and volunteers.

Event Registration

  • Event registration will only be offered online and will not be available at pre-race packet pickup or on race day. This will keep participants and volunteers from exchanging money to complete in-person registration.
  • Participants will be required to pick a starting time at registration. This will allow participants to arrive on race day at their starting time to prevent large gatherings at the start line.
  • Participants will be required to agree to abide by all COVID-19 social distancing rules while participating in the event, otherwise they will be subject to removal from the event.

Pre-Race Packet Pick-up

  • A pre-race packet pick-up will be offered prior to the event date.  This will allow participants the ability to wash their race shirt prior to wearing it at the event.
  • Packet pick-up will be at an outdoor location.
  • Signage will be posted that states that no one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 or known exposure to a COVID-19 case in the prior 14 days, is permitted at the event.
  • Signage will be posted to provide public health reminders regarding physical distancing, gatherings, options for high-risk individuals, and staying home if sick
  • Participants will be provided directions via electronic messaging prior to packet pickup to socially distance during packet pickup, and that no one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 or known exposure to a COVID-19 case in the prior 14 days, is permitted at the event.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available at the packet pickup tables for both participants and volunteers.
  • Once participants receive their race packet, they will be asked to leave the area to prevent groups from forming.

Race Day
On race day the goal is to have fewer than 50 people gathered at the event site at any one time.  While the Virginia Phase 3 guidelines allow gatherings up to 250 people, we are striving for much fewer on the race site at any one time!

Race Day Packet Pick-up

  • Packet pick-up will be at an outdoor location at the event site
  • Signage will be posted that states that no one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19, or known exposure to a COVID-19 case in the prior 14 days, is permitted at the event.
  • Signage will be posted to provide public health reminders regarding physical distancing, gatherings, options for high-risk individuals, and staying home if sick
  • Participants will be provided directions via electronic messaging prior to race day to socially distance at the event, and that no one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 or known exposure to a COVID-19 case in the prior 14 days, is permitted at the event.
  • Participants will be instructed to arrive no earlier than ten minutes prior to their start time.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available at the packet pickup tables for both participants and volunteers.
  • Once participants receive their race packet, they will be required to immediately start their event (Aquathlon 5K or the 5K Run)

Aquathlon/5K

  • Participants will be instructed to arrive no earlier than ten minutes prior to their start time to reduce participant gatherings at the race site.
  • A socially distanced transition area will be setup in the basketball court behind the pool lanes
  • Each transition chair will be sanitized before the first participant and between each subsequent participant.
  • There will be two sets of transition chairs (6 each), so that there is time for course volunteers to sanitize the chairs in between starting times.
  • A hand sanitizer station will be setup at the entrance of the transition area.
  • A hand sanitizer station will be setup at the exit of the transition area.

5K Fun Run

  • Participants will be instructed to arrive no earlier than ten minutes prior to their start time to reduce participant gatherings at the race site.
  • Runners will check-in and then immediately begin their 5K run/walk
  • Upon completion participants will be offered sealed beverages and individually wrapped snacks to re-hydrate and cool down
  • Participants will be instructed to leave the race site as soon as it is safe to do so (properly hydrated and cooled down) to limit social gatherings at the race site
  • Hand sanitizer will be setup at the start/finish line and at the aide station with the beverages/snacks

Volunteers

  • Volunteers will be required to wear face masks when they are unable to social distance themselves from participants and/or volunteers
  • Volunteers will have access to hand sanitizer
